Prenups Have Gone Mainstream

For a long time, the prenup stereotype was pretty specific: an older, wealthier partner asking a younger one to sign something before the wedding. That stereotype is quickly becoming outdated, and a new Bloomberg report confirms exactly what we've been seeing in our own consultations: couples of every type and income level are entering into prenups commonly and without stigma.

The Numbers Tell the Story

According to a recent Harris Poll cited by Bloomberg, more than half of engaged or married Americans under 45 said they'd signed a prenup as of this year — up sharply from just a third of Millennials surveyed back in 2022. This wave of new demand looks nothing like the old stereotype. Rather its everyday couples of all income levels and genders, and notably, women are now behind nearly half of all prenup requests nationally.

Part of this shift comes down to timing. Couples are marrying later than they used to — the average age at first marriage has climbed more than three years over the past two decades — which means more people are entering marriage with an established career, a home, retirement savings, or student debt already in the picture. The more you've built before the wedding, the more there is to talk through clearly.

Why This Matters Beyond the Headlines

The trend isn't about expecting a marriage to fail. If anything, the couples in the story describe the opposite: getting a prenup as a way to remove financial uncertainty so they can focus on the relationship, not as a hedge against it. That lines up with something we talk about often — the legal side of marriage isn't a threat to the romantic side of it. Handled well, it's one of the ways couples protect the life they're building together.

It also reflects a reality we see constantly in our own practice: the legal questions marriage raises — how property is owned, how debt is shared, what happens to a business or an inheritance — don't wait for a "someday" conversation. They're built into the marriage from day one, whether you've addressed them or not.
